Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich had the honor of opening the 59th season of Bundesliga. The two sides meet at Borussia Park, both aiming to win, which would no doubt present a boost before other challenges. These two sides have changed their respective head coaches during summer – Borussia landed Adi Hutter instead of Marco Rose, while Bayern replaced Hansi Flick with Julian Nagelsmann. A triumph at debut would be of extraordinary importance for either. It is nice to see football coming back once again, with both Bundesliga and the English Premier League starting on Friday night. EPL opens with the match between Brentford and Arsenal.
Preview
Borussia Monchengladbach (+425) is in solid shape, with four wins in a row, including the preseason games (one of them coming against Bayern at the Allianz Arena). Monch beat Kaiserslautern in the first round of the German Cup, 0-1, and prior to that posted victories against Groninger, 2-1, Bayern, 0-1, and Metz, 1-0.
The former UEFA Cup winner hasn’t changed their roster too much during the transfer window, with several experienced players (Wendt, Grun, Lang, and Ibrahima Traore) leaving the team, and just a few newcomers coming to Borussia Park. The biggest name there is Hannes Wolf, the 22-year old attacking midfielder who arrived from Red Bull Leipzig, while 18-year old Luca Netz came from Hertha.
Borussia will play offensive and open, as they always did. In the last couple of years, Monch’s games are very interesting, with goals coming on both sides in high volumes. From what we’ve seen during the prep period, that trend is going to continue.
Bayern Munich (-195) didn’t win a single match since the start of the preseason. And to make things even worse, in the past two, Nagelsmann’s side couldn’t score. Now, we are aware that all this doesn’t have to mean anything, but on the other hand, we would like to say that Nagelsmann’s philosophy of play is a bit cautious and slow for Bayern. However, we’ll see what happens next.
The Bundesliga champions lost to FC Koln, 3-2, played 2-2 with Ajax, lost to Monch, 0-2, and against Napoli, 0-3, which was one very hard slap in the face for all the Bavarians’ fans at Allianz. By the way, Bayern played that game with the best possible lineup.
There is no need for us to tell you about the efficiency of their matches. Over 2.5 goals are something pretty common when in Bayern’s matches.
Latest News
The hosts will have massive problems, as several of their starting players aren’t ready to play. Breel Embolo, Dennis Zakaria, Mamadou Doucoure, Kouadio Kone are all out due to respective injuries. Meanwhile, Ramy Bensebaini and Marcus Thuram, two of the most vital players for Borussia’s attack, are questionable.
Bayern comes to Monch without Marc Roca, Lucas Hernandez, and probably without Alphonso Davies, who is doubtful. Kingsley Coman is projected to skip the match.
Head to Head Games
Borussia managed to beat Bayern in the past two encounters at home, scoring at least two goals in each match. Throughout recent history, the Bavarians had lots of problems when playing at Borussia Park.
Prediction
Even though Bayern isn’t playing well, they are still our pick for winning this match, and that is because hosts have unreal injury troubles. We believe that Monchengladbach can’t cover up all the absent players, which would be a perfect chance for Bayern to shine.
Pick: Bayern Wins -195
Here is a preview for another Friday night match, between Brentford and Arsenal.
