The San Francisco 49ers have dismantled the current Super Bowl champions, the LA Rams, on Monday Night Football, 24-9. The big NFC West matchup and the replay of the last year’s NFC Championship game ended with the team from San Francisco completely dominating and sweeping the rivals.
That domination was especially noticeable when the Rams had the football. Despite the champions having more first downs and more possession, they couldn’t do anything, experiencing beating just a few times in the past couple of years.
Matt Stafford suffered seven sacks for 54 negative yards, ending the game without a single TD pass, with one interception and one lost fumble, with 254 passing yards. Without any doubt, this has been one of the worst performances of the Rams’ offensive line in a while. And not just that, they have been failing to protect Stafford since the beginning of the season, allowing 16 sacks on the veteran QB. Now that is why Stafford’s six interceptions in these four weeks, the most in the NFL.
Dre Greenlaw carried the Niners’ defense with 12 solo hits, while Samson Ebukam and Nick Bosa had two sacks each, rolling over the Rams’ defense and over Stafford. This has been a pleasant night for Kyle Shanahan’s defensive crew, who reminded everyone about their qualities.
On the other side, Jimmy Garoppolo had a solid evening. He threw for 239 yards and one touchdown, without being sacked or any turnovers committed. That one TD pass was to Deebo Samuel, who would deliver a 57-yard score, even though it seemed that the Rams’ defense would stop the hybrid WR after two or three yards. Deebo cooked several of the defenders before entering the end zone.
“Having two weeks under his belt, I knew Jimmy would come out there and be the Jimmy that we know,” Samuel spoke about Garoppolo following the event.
Talanoa Hufanga had his five minutes of glory tonight, with the 22-yaar old safety picking Stafford and returning the football for 52 yards all the way home, for an eruption of joy at the Levi’s Stadium. He did this mid-way through the fourth, putting an end to this event and crushing all hopes of the champions that they might pull back.
Deebo ended the night with 115 receiving yards, and the next best thing in SF was Brandon Aiyuk with 37. Jeff Wilson Jr. ran for 74 on 18 snaps and one touchdown. The 49ers had 88 rushing yards, while the rams posted 57.

We can now talk about their problems with the running game, as both Dan Henderson and Cam Akers post terrible performances. The two had 40 rushing yards on 15 carries. Cooper Kupp had 14 receptions for 122 yards, while Tyler Higbee added 73 on ten catches.
“The story of the night from an offensive perceptive was self-inflicted wounds,” Sean McVay said. “Just above the neck errors where we’re not doing the things that we are capable of and I expect us to be better than that.”
He now has seven losses over Shanahan in eight games.
The Rams head back to LA now for a three-game homestand. The streak begins against the Dallas Cowboys, continues against the Carolina Panthers and ends against the 49ers.
Meanwhile, Garoppolo and the crew play back-to-back games on the road, meeting the Panthers in Charlotte and the Falcons in Atlanta.
